A few story examples

I moved from homeschool to a private Christian high school. While learning about academics and my faith under the study of my parents was great, I always felt like my relationship with Jesus was filtered through my family.

From day one of my freshman year, I noticed something different in the air. There was a joy I realized I lacked. It was my science teacher that set a new course for my faith. He was not just a good teacher, but one who exuded wonder in how God created us and the earth. It made me question my own perspective, and one day I made a choice.

I would start to welcome in Jesus to my everyday studies and find places the Bible applied to my school topics. Since then, this practice has built a real, active daily relationship with Jesus. I started to feel His presence and experience the joy that my teacher—and many students I had met—expressed in their own lives.

I am a linebacker for my high school football team and Jayden is our strong safety. We’re pretty good as a team, undefeated so far. And now our eyes are set on college scholarships. It was our one goal, outside of doing well enough in grades to satisfy the colleges we have in our sights.

But my coach was focused on something bigger than this goal. He wants his athletes to be men of God. It’s bigger than the field. It’s about loving others, as Jesus did. Not the popular kids, the fellow athletes, and close friends—but those who need a lift. The burdened and misfits.

I felt this pull on my spirit whenever I was at lunch. At the table across from me sat a lonely kid who didn’t seem to have friends. So, I took the leap to sit by him the next day and asked Jayden to join. And from that day on, we chose to do the same. What we found is: that small act of love and obedience transformed our own relationships with Jesus. It doesn’t mean we aren’t focused on the college scholarship, but we are giving more priority to the Lord’s direction in our day. And that is making us men of God. The higher calling.

I recently had my son enrolled in Christian Middle Academy, Elijah. As a product of Jesus-centered education myself, I know the value of a true Jesus-centered education in developing a strong faith.

Elijah’s best friend attends a public school, and while it was difficult to split them up, I knew that in the long run it was the right choice. What impressed me most was the desire of the faculty to teach the Bible to students. Not just a secular education with a Bible verse on the wall.

I started to notice a change in Elijah! Not that he was a bad kid, but whenever he and his best friend were at the house, my son had a joyfulness and purity that stood apart. In just a few months attending the school, he had started to open his Bible on his own, with a new passion for it! And even bigger, one day I walked in to find Elijah having a talk about Jesus with his best friend, who has even attended church with my family. And all of this started with Elijah’s new school. From the classroom to the home, and outside relationships—joy is spreading!

I am the principal for a Christian high school. I’ve worked in education for over 20 years and am (gratefully) just as passionate today as when I started. But that arc of my story has its highs and lows, I wasn’t always excited.

In the process of my career, I was getting burnt out, academics was not filling my cup. I got to the point where I no longer felt called to teach at the school, even considering a change in profession. That’s when I got on his knees and prayed, asking Jesus to give me wisdom in what to do next. I needed a door to open—a return to the joy that I felt when teaching early on.

A week later I got a phone call for a Christian school who had an opening for a new principal. I accepted the role and went into the next year with a clear intent to further the name of Jesus with my students and staff. To make Jesus not just an empty word swallowed up by academics, but central to the adults my school was preparing. Our high school is a Jesus-centered school, and its students are not only moving on to be the best in their career, but the best followers of Jesus.
